Five Reality Dating Shows You Need To Binge Watch TONIGHT
Love Island
Okay, so maybe the all caps on "tonight" was a little much. You might not have the time (or patience) to watch all of these lovey-dovey shows in one night, but you do have to at least tune into to the one that's currently on air five nights a week. Yes, the popular U.K. reality show, Love Island, has finally made its way overseas to the States along with its dedicated fanbase. What's great about this show is that viewers get to be involved, voting on who they want to see go on dates in the villa or who their fav couple is. The show is almost like a game of musical chairs: whoever doesn't get a chair, i.e isn't in a couple at the re-coupling ceremony, is out of the game. New islanders arrive at the villa each episode to keep things interesting and tempt the group, resulting in some couple switches. As for the prize at the end? The public gets to decide which couple that lasted is their favorite, resulting in a $100,000 reward. If five nights a week simply isn't enough for you, you can binge-watch the U.K. version on Hulu.
Ex On The Beach
Here's another show we stole from the Brits, Ex on the Beach. Season 3 airs on July 16th, but you can binge-watch the two previous seasons on MTV.com. What I love about this show is that it's like a huge mash-up of stars from different reality shows like The Challenge, The Bachelor, and Are You The One. Now, for a reality tv connoisseur like myself this is pretty exciting, but for those who don't know their Paulie's from their Cory's, it's okay. Many of the exes are not reality tv people, providing viewers with some fresh, new personalities to judge. The plot twist for this series is that the original cast apparently aren't told that the show is actually about the return of their exes, leaving them all shook when they find out. And of course, it wouldn't be a reality show without eliminations. It's exes versus originals, and typically the originals have the power to decide which ex they want to vote off the beach.
A Double Shot At Love
Now, this show caught me by surprise. It stars DJ Pauly D and Vinny Guadagnino of the popular reality show Jersey Shore. I was never a big fan of Jersey Shore, so I didn't bother with this one until I was really bored and craving another corny, but cute dating show. I decided to give it a shot (haha get it, shot?) and ended up finishing the series in two days. A Double Shot At Love is a reboot of the show that was supposed to be a spin-off of A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila. Indicative of its name, in this version of the show female contestants have an opportunity to win one or even both of Vinny and Pauly D's hearts. I won't spoil it, but let's just say if you thought girls fighting over one guy gets wild, throwing in one more is a whole other story. Binge to your heart's desire on MTV.com.
Are You The One?
I hate to show favoritism, but this is the one (ok, last quip, I swear). This show is now on its eight season and the previous seasons are also available on MTV.com. I find this show in particular to be the most genuine of them all simply because the contestants cannot choose their match based on attraction. Instead, they are forced to find someone they are compatible with. The name of the game is to find your perfect match based off a dating algorithm that determines compatibility through questionnaires, interviews, and modern technological testing. If all 20 contestants don't find their perfect match after ten weeks, they don't win the prize money of $1 million. Of course, they have a little help along the way with things like truth booths and competitions for dates. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. Are You The One also continues to be one of the best reality shows when it comes to diverse casting, this season casting all gender and sexually fluid contestants. Convinced yet?
Bachelor in Paradise
Last, but definitely not least, we have a classic on our hands. Finally hopping off the MTV train, here's the popular spin-off of perhaps America's classiest (and I use that word loosely) reality dating show, The Bachelor. Bachelor in Paradise takes place on a secluded exotic island, aka paradise, with former Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants mingling and hopefully falling in love. We should all know by now that I love a good mash-up, so the fact that all my favs from different seasons finally get to meet is almost too much to handle. Almost. I will be tuning into this season on August 5th to see who falls in love and who returns home alone (again) and if you're not already caught up, episodes are available for binge-watching on abc.go.com.
